Principal's April Newsletter

Dear Parents/Guardians:

March has certainly been an active month. We celebrated reading with many visitors who read some of our favorite books. MaryAnn Castagnetta, a published author, came to our school to introduce her newest book, Elephant Soup. We also celebrated our wonderful reading accomplishments with our Reading Challenge. We read an amazing amount of minutes. Together we celebrated with a Pajama/Movie day and snacks.

Our Science Fair preparation began with a meeting with Mrs. Tanzi. The second annual Lindeneau Science Fair is May 25th.

The Third Annual Festival of the Arts under the direction of Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Wojcik and Mr. Mosley was a wonderful event to behold. The artwork was a spectacular sight to see and the musical ensembles were an added pleasure. Lindeneau children are quite a talented group of children!

Our monthly Parent University was a very informative session which focused on NJ ASK Language Arts information. The next meeting will take place on April 7th and will highlight the Math section of the NJ ASK.  Thanks to Mr. Stokes and Mrs. Hoffman we have these important meetings to keep parents abreast of their child’s education.

School Spirit Week was capped off with the celebration of our Caring Pillar Award. The multi purpose room was a sea of red showing our school spirit and that we are a caring school. The award winners will be treated to a pizza lunch. The following students were recognized for their caring nature:

This year a special festival will take place at Herbert Hoover Middle School. All the orchestras from the south end schools will be participating in the South Edison Orchestra Festival. Join us at 7:00 P.M. on April 6th for  this special performance.

It’s that time again where we make decisions about our children’s education. The School Board elections will take place on Wednesday, April 27th. The polls are open from 12:00-9:00 P.M. Please get out and vote!  To assist you with making your decision, Candidates Night will take place again this year. Hear what the candidates have to say. The evening begins at 7:30 at Woodrow Wilson Middle School on April 12th.

Our PTO elections will take place at our May meeting, but if you are interested in running for one of the available positions, you need to be present at the April 14th PTO meeting. Our new superintendent, Dr. Richard O’Malley will also be present at the April meeting to discuss the school budget.

Spring break begins on April 19th. Because of inclement weather and the need to make up a school day, April 18th is a full school day.

When we return on April 25th, final preparations will be underway for the NJ ASK tests which will begin on May 3rd for grade 5 and May 9th for grades 3 and 4. More information to follow regarding these high stakes tests.

On April 27th, the student body gets to bring a parent to school. Our first annual Take Your Parent to School Day is a day to experience a small piece of your child’s school day and lunch period. The flyer for this day went home already. Please be sure to return the cut off so we can plan accordingly for your visit.

On April 28th, it is Take Your Child to Work Day. If you intend to take your child to work with you, you need to have a letter stating that your child will be out for the day. The letter needs to be brought in to school  by April 28th for it to be considered an excused day.

Our spring trips are beginning again with the first grade’s visit to the Staten Island Museum. Thank you to the PTO these trips are available to our students.

Just a few reminders:
There is no parking or standing in the faculty lot across the street. There have been too many close calls with near accidents. I need all my students and teachers in one piece.

Please remember that no sugar products are to be sent into school for parties. I appreciate all the cooperation  that I have already had with this healthy life initiative. The students are truly choosing wiser snacks so it is definitely having them think much more carefully about their eating habits.

The days are getting warmer so the children are outside for recess and when the mornings are warmer they will be lining up outside once again. Please be sure that they have a jacket. Some of them are not wearing jackets and although spring is in the air it is still too cold to be out without a jacket.

In closing, I want to encourage you to check out the new Edison website, www.edison.k12.nj.us. You will find the school website if you go to the top bar and scroll down under schools. The PTO website is also linked to the school webpage. Thanks to Miss Allison, our website is off to a great start.

During this holiday season, I want to wish those of you celebrating Passover or Easter a happy and healthy time with your families. Time together is a rare and special gift, enjoy each moment of it.

Yours in education,
