Principals Newsletter

Dear Parents/Guardians,

May is upon us and hopefully the weather will finally realize that it is spring. Spring fever has hit though and the third through fifth grade students are eager to show their "stuff" on the NJ ASK. Fifth grade students will begin NJ ASK on Monday, May 6th through Thursday, May 9th. Third and fourth graders will be taking NJ ASK starting on Monday, May 13th through Thursday, May 16. The fourth grade will take the Science portion of the NJ ASK on Friday, May 17th. Makeups for absent students will take place the week following their grade level tests. Please encourage your children to do their best and try their hardest. Their placement for middle school or ability grouping in their next grade is dependent upon the NJ ASK scores which are used as one type of criteria for appropriate placement.

Last week we celebrated the end of the marking period with a PBSIS Rock Climbing Competition/Pep rally assembly. Prior to the assembly the students enjoyed a video directed by the PBSIS team, Mr. Kitchell and some of the students. They encouraged their classmates to always try their hardest and work hard every day. At the same assembly 27 students were chosen to have pizza lunch with me on Friday, May 3rd. The students were chosen from the tiger tickets that were collected throughout the marking period. The winners were:

Tiger Ticket 3rd Marking Period Winners

Sara Nazzaro, Veronica Racz, Johnny Oranchak, Cassie Scott, Erkabay Girma, Joseph D’Elia, Rediet Mereke, Daisy Mendez, Nadia Rosario, Danasia Jackson, Joshua Stephens, Brian Ward, Becca Walsh, Briana Villegas, Anjali Alishala, David Hernandez, Paul Ionescu, Danaya Jackson, Miles Banks, Iman Siddiqui, Michael Haluska, Brian Villegas, Jillian Lord, Jonathan Kraut, Nivedita Nambalat, Tatiana Depaola, Maya Komatsuzaki

We are very proud of them and all the students since the number of tiger tickets entered for the raffles have been overwhelming! Our teachers, always encouraging our students to do their best, competed in a rock wall climbing scarf competition and a race for the best time across the wall. Respectively, Mrs. Galligan and Miss Brotspies won the competitions.

Once again our Take Your Parents to School Day was a huge success. It was so wonderful to see the students pride when showing their parents what they do each day. Thank you to all who came and visited.

That evening we also held our annual Festival of the Arts. Thanks to Ms. Blahuta, Mrs. Resnick and Mrs. Wojcik for organizing and presenting a night filled with music and fine art. We hope you enjoyed the little taste of music that the students presented and hope you join us on May 30th at 7:00 at John Marshall School for our annual Spring Concert.

Class trips are happening soon. Please check your child’s backpack for detailed information.

Dr. O’Malley has announced that school will be closed on May 28th because of the extra inclement weather day that was not used, therefore schools will be closed on May 27th and 28th for Memorial Day weekend.

Enjoy the beautiful weather,

Rosemary Schutz
